Dr. Wheeler’s Biography

Dr. Barry Wheeler is a licensed naturopathic doctor in the states of Washington, Oregon, and California. He was born in Portland, Oregon where he learned that it truly can “rain all the time.” Most of his youth he lived in the mountains to the East of Portland and gained a very profound appreciation for the flora and fauna of this area.

After high school he attended Oregon State University, majoring in Biology and International Studies. There he received numerous awards, including Magna Cum Laude and Robert R. Poole Scholarship for Pre-medical Students. He has traveled extensively in Latin America studying Spanish and herbal medicine. He wrote his undergraduate thesis on a medicine plant he studied in the Amazon Rainforest called ‘Chuchuhuasu: its uses and commerce’.

His interest in nutrition was peaked after reading the book ‘Nourishing Traditions,’ by Sally Fallon after which he spent several months working with researchers in the Linus Pauling Institute studying ascorbic acid (aka vitamin C) and reactive oxygen species (aka free radicals).

Naturopathic medicine was an easy choice for his graduate education because of his background in herbal medicine, nutrition, and strong desire to help others. Due to his passion for clinical medicine Dr. Wheeler’s first choice was the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) where they have many community clinics that provide a wide array of clinical opportunities. At NCNM he studied men’s and women’s health, herbal medicine, homeopathy, clinical nutrition, physical medicine, and bio-identical hormones.

Dr. Wheeler now works at Meridian Valley Lab and helps educate other doctors from around world about hormone testing and holistic medicine. He is continuing his education at the Tahoma Clinic by attending weekly grand rounds with other Tahoma Clinic doctors, including Dr. Wright.
